| Big Bang! -- Let There Be Light! |
The pieced background represents celestial objects of various shapes and sizes, quilted and beaded to create a twinkling effect. For the foreground, an abstract mottled fabric captures the roiling black clouds of the universe. Sandwiched in between are raw-edged fabric flames in vibrant yellows, reds, and oranges. The quilting stitches extend through to the back, outlining the roiling clouds and fiery flames, while crystal beading adds a final shimmer to the dark sky.
This is the third piece in my Black | White Improv Quilting series.
I have always been drawn to fabric—its color, patterns, and texture. Some of my earliest memories involve playing with my grandmother’s fabric scraps. She kept a big box in a bathroom closet—or at least it seemed huge to a two- or three-year-old—and would empty it into the bathtub so I could dive in. Soon after came sewing, starting with threading buttons on a needle. By age 12, I was designing and making my own clothes. Over the years, I continued sewing for myself and later for my three daughters. These days, I devote my time to creating digital textile designs, quilting, hand-stitching, beading, and embellishing fabric wall hangings.
